Irvine, California, is a planned city located in Orange County. In 2008, Irvine was deemed by CNNMoney.com to be the fourth best place in the US to live, while in 2011, Businessweek gave Irvine the distinction of being the fifth best city in the nation. Irvine was developed in the 1960s by the Irvine Company and formally incorporated in 1971. It is situated on 66 square miles, with Tustin to the north, Santa Ana to the northwest, Lake Forest to the east, Laguna Hills to the southeast, Costa Mesa to the west and Newport Beach to the southwest. Most of the city lies in a broad flat valley, although there are some hills, plateaus and canyons to the north and south. Irvine is divided into townships, referred to as villages, that are separated by six-lane streets. The houses in each village are of similar designs and each village has a commercial center and schools. All streets have landscaping allowances as well as bicycle paths, parks and greenbelts. Some villages are overseen by homeowners' associations which regulate the appearance of houses and offer neighborhood amenities such as swimming pools and tennis courts.

Irvine Transportation and Commuting

Irvine is easily accessed by several major highways and freeways including I-5, I-405, SR 73, SR 133, SR 241, and SR 261. Irvine has designed and constructed their street systems with the latest in signal timing and layout making them capable of handling a higher volume of traffic than the other cities in Orange County. The Orange County Transportation Authority provides local bus service to Irvine. Commuter rail service is provided by Metrolink via the Orange County Line and the IEOC Line. IShuttle is Irvine's mass-transit bus system that maintains a schedule between local businesses, shopping centers and residential areas. The city also encourages bike transit by means of over 40 miles of city bike paths. The nearest airport is John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
